The Old Railway
In 1853 a company was formed to construct a railway from the GNR loop at Kirkstead to Horncastle via Woodhall. The line was completed in August 1855.
The line was a single track of approximately 7 miles in length with one end at Kirkstead Junction, a small passenger station at Woodhall, and ending in Horncastle. Kirkstead Junction was later renamed Woodhall Junction.
The line was closed to passenger traffic in 1954 and finally closed to freight traffic in April 1971. The track bed was eventually purchased by Lincolnshire County Council and is now a walking trail.
Horncastle station was used for various purposes until 1985 when it was demolished.
